House Breaking Your Puppy
Lucky you! You have a German Pinscher and they housebreak very easily. They
want to be clean. If you follow these steps, you should have a housebroken pup
in no time.
It is very important to keep him from having an accident for
the first two weeks. Your pup needs to set a habit of going outside. Pups can't
hold for long and he needs to go outside about every 3 to 4 hours. He will
sleep through the night but wakes early and you must get up and take him
outside. Your pup will be able to hold longer as he gets older.
DO NOT PUNISH him if he has an accident unless you catch him in the act.
Then say NO and take him outside. Stayu with him and praise him when he goes
outside. Never hit the puppy.
Keep him in a crate unless a member of the family can watch him. If he
starts sniffing the floor, put him out. Say "OUTSIDE?' He doesn't know
where outside is until you show him.
When you are home, put him outside every three hours. Always go with him to
offer lots of praise when he goes.
He needs half an hour outside after each meal.
If he has an accident in the crate, do not scold, but sound disappointed.
Put him outside and praise him if he goes. CLEAN the soiled crate very well, to get the smell out of the crate or an
accident area such as the rug or floor.
Put bedding in the crate and see if he will keep it clean. Some pups will
hold on bedding but mess on newspaper. Put newspaper in the crate if you are
going to be gone for over 5 or 6 hours until you are sure he can hold that
long.
He will need about a week to adjust to your hours and routine.
NEVER HIT OR SPANK. DO NOT RUB his nose in his accident. DO NOT HIT WITH OR
SHAKE a newspaper.
To punish for an accident, shame him with your low voice. Say NO very
loudly in a deep voice. Make him go outside. You can only shame him if you
catch him in the "act".
Praise! Praise! Praise! Let him know how wonderful he is when he goes
"outside".
